 writing sci-fi:

I believe all writers--all artists--are visionaries. We all understand that we are tapping into a creative source, and I believe sometimes we DO see events ahead of time: because these events are created in that creative space before they actually come into being. If we were living in another society, we would be better taken care of for this ability of ours. (We'd be considered shamans and high priestesses!! Honor, accolades, comfortable lodging, free food...) As for myself, I don't find writing sci-fi or fantasy scary. Right now I'm dealing with a script that has turned out to be this one huge great prediction. I knew full well what I was doing when I wrote it; "This is a possible future. I see this future. I'm going to write it down and bring it about." And out of all possible futures--because that is what prediction is, a list of possibilities to choose from--this one I saw is coming true. So, it's not scary but it's certainly frustrating and amazing in turns. Try writing in a character and then have him become real, and in your life! Try having lines you wrote many years ago come out of his mouth in real time. Then try this; "Hey! I wrote you in! Isn't that amazing!??" "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT." It's another story in and of itself! Ah, all the subtleties of the craft. I'd be interested to hear other experiences of the sci-fi/fantasy writers out there! cheers--Hilary
